Foreword by Greg Fisher

As a sail-maker, sailing is my life and my work, so you would think a sailing vacation would be the last thing I would choose to do when I got time off.  That’s what my family thought too.  So when I planned a trip to the British Virgin Islands , they thought I had lost my mind.  It turns out to have been one of the best vacations we have ever taken. Every sailor needs to make the trip to this sailing paradise at least once. I just wish Bob’s book had been available to us when we first sailed in the BVI.  He has taken 99% of the hassle and uncertainty out of the planning process.

How to Bareboat… it’s easier than you think, is based on his extensive experience as the organizer and leader of numerous BVI cruises and flotillas.  He has thought of every detail, right down to the cloth napkins that save on trash and also won’t blow away when dining al fresco.  His menus, matched to shopping lists, which also take into account what provisions and services are available in each location, are simply brilliant.  His “Float Plans” with daily recommendations for anchorages and what to do ashore are, spot on to capture the quintessential BVI experiences. And I applaud his mission to get more of us small boat sailors into the big boats (but only for vacation)… it truly is easier than you think, but made even more so with Bob’s expert guidance and up-to-date information.

Every great endeavor needs a great planner.  Bob New has been exactly that for the Flying Scot class for more than 25 years.  He is an effective promoter and organizer.  His attention to detail is reflected in the innovative and highly efficient way he has rigged his Flying Scot for racing. He is also the ultimate teacher and mentor. Recently, under Bob’s leadership, we added a Top Gun School to the Flying Scot Midwinters with the goal of improving everyone’s racing skills.  The program was a huge success with standing room only in the daily classroom sessions with the top Scot sailors as instructors.  Your great adventure is off to a great start with this book.
