Photos - Mike Howard

The How to Bareboat  book and website both feature beautiful photos of BVI scenes and action by Mike Howard, a beach portrait and wedding photographer in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  He is a member of the elite Canon Professional Services group. Mike was chosen for this project primarily for his skill in working in the bright sun on beaches and near the water.  He is also a rookie sailor and first time visitor to the BVI.  We wanted to capture the first-timers impressions of this paradise and Mike was perfect for the job.  As a parrothead** and guitar player, Mike also was in charge of "tunes" for the research cruise.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make it possible for first-timers to enjoy this magical sailing paradise by showing you 'it's easier than you think' We want to help you just as we were mentored early in our cruising experience.

Dedication

This project is dedicated to Bud and Kathy Barrett, who were our mentors on that eye-opening first cruise back in 1991.  Bud taught us all about "island time".  This guide, however, is far too organized for Bud, who feels that any thing beyond the next cold beer is "long-range planning".

Nautical Bob New & Kathleen Rich-New

bulletBob New grew up around small boats and has raced sailboats since the age of ten.  He is a past commodore of the Carolina Sailing Club and life member of the Corinthian Sailing Club of Dallas, Texas.  He got his Nautical Bob nickname at a nautical trivia* contest at the Flying Scots' Glow-in-the-Dark regatta when his hand was up before they even asked the questions.  He is a retired corporate trainer and now works with Kathleen as a consultant in her businesses.

bulletKathleen Rich-New is from Kansas and never saw the ocean until her high school graduation trip to the Gulf Coast.  She has since become a PADI certified diver and qualified to skipper up to 50' sailboats anywhere in the world.  After her first BVI cruise in 1991, she attended an all-women's sailing school in the Greek Islands to get her certificate. (She would rather skipper than cook),  Kathleen is CEO of ClarityWorks! Consulting and The Executive Woman's Coach.  She and Bob are the authors of "Looking for the Good Stuff - A guide to appreciating and enjoying life."

*Nautical Trivia:

The saying "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" has a nautical origin and has nothing to do with a simian or his anatomy.  In the days of iron cannonballs and wooden ships, they used a tray called a "monkey" to enable them to stack cannonballs into a neat pyramid.  The monkey was normally made of iron, but for special occasions they had a brass monkey.  Well, if you understand that the coefficient of expansion is different for brass and iron, you can see how it could be cold enough to cause the iron balls to tumble off of the brass monkey.

**Parrothead - Jimmy Buffet fan

For you "parrotheads" out there... What Jimmy Buffet song specifically mentions a prominent harbor on Tortola and "the lights of St. Thomas"?  The answer is somewhere on this website...
